Coventry 0-4 Saints

Butts Park Arena 23/04/2023

The final away game of the season took Saints to the midlands to face Coventry United for the third time this season.

Coventry had, somewhat surprisingly, beaten Saints in the League Cup early in the season, before Saints then won the league game at St Marys. With Saints getting back to winning ways the week before with a good win at home to London City, I definitely had my hopes up for this game. Thankfully, the commentary was available on the Saints' official site, so there isn't too much of note to report going on around the game. Not too many interesting people, or strange behaviour around when you're sitting at home listening to the radio (well, laptop).

The first surprise was to see Beth Howard in goal, replacing Kayla Rendell who was ill. There were a couple of other changes, but it still looked like a pretty strong side.

Saints 1-0 London City Lionesses

We arrived at the stadium expecting a tough game, with London City being second in the league at the start of play.

Once we were seated I noticed a DJ booth set up right in front of us, which didn’t bode well. As it turned out the electronic tosh didn’t last long as the booth was carried away and the Saints band appeared.

I quite liked the band at the start of the game, but would get annoyed by one of them as the game got going.

My head was still feeling a bit foggy after a Saturday afternoon and evening recording ten noisy songs at a little studio in the shadow of Fratton Park, so I was quite pleased that this was a 2pm kick off, as it meant I could get several cups of tea inside me before leaving home.

Saints have had a difficult few weeks, not scoring and losing by the odd goal, so it was going to be a tough game against the top of the league side.

We parked nearer SMS this week, so were in our seats before the band started their rendition of “When The Saints”, but as soon as they did the crowd got really involved, and I could see pretty much all the young kids singing and clapping along. Sadly, by the time the teams ran out they had stopped and some generic music was playing and the crowd’s enthusiasm had dropped. It seemed a shame as it would have sounded really great if they’d been able to run out with the crowd making the noise they were.

There were tables set out in the concourse with free posters of the Saints team, which had Red Army on the reverse. It was a nice touch, and I know I would have absolutely loved it if I’d been able to get a free saints poster when I was a kid. Having You Reds on the back is a bit odd, now that Saint’s wear a white shirt with a thin red stripe that look like someone bought a load of knock-off Ajax shirts at a dodgy market stall.

Saints 0-1 Durham

St Marys, 19/03/2023

A 12:00 kick off and major roadworks on the Redbridge Flyover, means we have to go up to the M27 at Ower and onto the M271 just to get back to Millbrook Road, so after walking the dog and then negotiating all that traffic nonsense, the band had started playing and the teams were out on the pitch by the time we got to our seats.

It was milder, but I still had my St Pauli snood on, however the SV Hamburg coat wearing man wasn’t there. I see that as a victory for St Pauli.

The crowd seemed smaller than usual, which I put down to it being an early kickoff on Mothers Day.

Durham have had a slow start to the season, but they feature ex Liverpool and England striker Jess Clarke, so they weren’t to be underestimated.

Saints 0-0 Blackburn Rovers

The first home game for a while, and the first of three consecutive games at St Marys, and we weren’t there.

In the lead up to the game I was driving to London listening to Solent. They were concentrating on the men’s game at Old Trafford, but they did cover this game and aired interviews with both head coach Marieanne Spacey-Cale and forward Katie Wilkinson. Solent also said they would provide updates during the commentary of the Saints V Man United game.
